I'm currently using DirectNIC on Terrell Russell's recommendation. They're based in New Orleans, their UI is excellent, and apparently so is their customer service (I haven't needed them).

Namecheap may be a good, cheap alternative, especially for reserving names. Use SWITCH2NC as a coupon code.
